When is the 2022 Australian Open and Where Can You Watch It?

Australian Open 2022 is going on right now! Don't miss a second by checking out these broadcast details:

  • When: January 16th to 30th
  • Where: Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia
  • Where to watch: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Plus, and the Tennis Channel

Naomi Osaka will be returning to Melbourne to defend the women’s title she won in 2021. Osaka is presumably the favorite to defend her title in 2022, but she’s also coming off a four-month break from tennis. So if she’s rusty, you can expect challengers to pounce, especially from U.S. Open sensation Emma Raducanu.

On the men's side, the situation is a bit murkier. Officially, the defending men's champion, Novak Djokovic, will not be competing in this year's tournament. For a quick recap, here's what happened in the Djokovic saga:

Timeline of Djokovic and Australian Open Entry

  1. November 19, 2021: Australian Open requests all participants to the vaccinated.
  2. December 16, 2021: Novak Djokovic tests positive for COVID-19.
  3. December 22, 2021: Djokovic test negative for COVID-19.
  4. December 30, 2021: Djokovic receives a medical exemption for the Australian Open from the tournament directors.
  5. January 5, 2022: Djokovic is detained upon arrival in Melbourne by border control.
  6. January 6, 2022: Djokovic's visa is revoked by the Australian government, and he is placed in detention.
  7. January 10, 2022: Djokovic's visa is reinstated after winning an appeal of his cancellation.
  8. January 11, 2022: Australian Open officials list Djokovic as the top seed for the tournament.
  9. January 14, 2022: Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used his ministerial discretion to revoke Djokovic's visa once more.
  10. January 16, 2022: Djokovic's appeal is denied in Australian Federal Court, and he is deported from Australia.

Without Djokovic playing, the field is wide open to several challengers, including Daniil Medvedev, Denis Shapovalov, and 2009 winner of the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal. While these titans of tennis are playing, the Australian Open will be without some other big names, such as Serena Williams and Roger Federer.

The final item on our list is YouTube TV. This live streaming service owned by Google includes access to ESPN and much more. Find out exactly which channels you can watch by heading to the YouTube TV channel list.
